Short Ride

Genre: Americana, Folk, Rock, Christian

Short Ride is very much autobiographical. Not every song points back to me but many of them do. Many of the lyrics have resonated with folks and I hope you’ll give it a listen.

Lyrics

Short Ride

I was a fourteen year old malcontent
On the day I walked that aisle
Told the lord he was my savior
Made my mom and daddy smile

Grew up, left home, made my own way
Turned my back on all I knew
Figured my new friends had it right
And my past was full of fools

It’s a short ride down the highway to hell
Yea the party never ends
But your soul you’ll have to sell
Sure was having a good time
Wasn’t long before I fell
It’s a short ride down the highway to hell

Another double shot of Cuervo
A few more hits on mary jane
One more girl to notch my bedpost
I can’t recall her name

Another day at work hung over
The high cost of living low
Turned out just like mama said
Dusty bibles lead to dirty souls

It’s a short ride down the highway to hell
Yea the party never ends
But your soul you’ll have to sell
Sure was having a good time
Wasn’t long before I fell
It’s a short ride down the highway to hell

Spent a lot of years living life in a stupor
Till amazing grace washed all of that away
Came back home to life with a future
Told the devil he won’t lead me astray - no more

It’s a short ride down the highway to hell
Yea the party never ends
But your soul you’ll have to sell
Sure was having a good time
Wasn’t long before I fell
It’s a short ride down the highway to hell
Thought I was having a good time
Wasn’t long before I fell
It’s a short ride down the highway to hell
Die Too Young

Long steep hill on a cold rainy night
On the ridge was the glow of the other headlights
She screamed when she saw the blinding light
The crash of the metal marked the end of her life

You’re never gonna’ get too old to die too young
You’re never gonna’ know when that breath is the very last one
It’s always going to seem like your life has just begun
‘Cause you're never gonna’ get too old to die too young

Hundred fifty miles an hour was the speed it blowed
As it ripped apart the walls of his bungalow
He looked up to the sky where his ceiling used to be
The middle of the funnel was the last thing he would see

You’re never gonna’ get too old to die too young
You’re never gonna’ know when that breath is the very last one
It’s always going to seem like your life has just begun
‘Cause you're never gonna’ get too old to die too young

Scratch off your list before that bucket stubs you toe
Get off the fast lane and live life nice and slow
Take time to share your feeling with the ones you love
Make sure you’re squared away with the man above

You’re never gonna’ get too old to die too young
You’re never gonna’ know when that breath is the very last one
It’s always going to seem like your life has just begun
‘Cause you're never gonna’ get too old to die too young
I Believe

I used to think it might be true that every path goes to the same place
I laughed out loud when someone said that there might be just one way
If I can’t see it it ain’t real is all that I would say
But let me share with you what I believe today

I believe in the Father - I believe in the Son
I believe in the Holy Ghost, I believe all three are one
I believe that Jesus died and he rose up from the grave
Sits at the right hand of God above and he’s coming back someday to claim his bride
Well I hope we’ll all be ready when he comes
What a glorious day that’s going to be
I believe

I used to say good and evil just exist inside your mind
Point to any religion and you’ll find war not far behind
Live the golden rule and it will all work out just fine
But let me share with you how my truth is now defined

I believe in the Father - I believe in the Son
I believe in the Holy Ghost, I believe all three are one
I believe that Jesus died and he rose up from the grave
Sits at the right hand of God above and he’s coming back someday to claim his bride
Well I hope we’ll all be ready when he comes
We better keep those flames a burning till he comes
We better be on our knees praying till he comes
What a glorious day that’s going to be
I believe, I believe, I believe
New Messiah

You look at me and think that I am something that I’m not
I don’t have the answers I don’t even know the plot
Sometimes I’m not sure if I believe all I've been taught
I’m not the one you're looking for
I'm not the man you might have thought

I can’t be your new messiah
Don’t look at me I’m not the way
I can’t be your new messiah
All that I can do is love you till my dying day

I heard you say you think that we are desperately lost
Well that just might be fact but then again it might be false
I can’t make you believe the truth I can’t carry your cruel cross
I’m not the one you're looking for
I'm not the man you might have thought

I can’t be your new messiah
Don’t look at me I’m not the way
I can’t be your new messiah
All that I can do is love you till my dying day

All that I can do is love you till my dying day
All that I can do is point you to the only way
I can’t be your new messiah
Truth without Love

Did you hear about Joe? Wife caught him messing around
It must be true ‘cause it’s all over town
People like him just make me sick
We can’t let him be a part of our clique

Truth without love is a hammer that smashes
Truth without love is a sword that slashes
Truth without love is a club that bashes
Truth without love is a lie

Mary got hooked on the Demerol
That the doctor gave her when she had her fall
I even hear she’s been drinking again
Somebody needs to tell her that she’s living in sin

Truth without love is a hammer that smashes
Truth without love is a sword that slashes
Truth without love is a club that bashes
Truth without love is a lie

We like to gather ‘round
Beneath the white steeple
And point our righteous fingers
At all the sinful people

Truth without love is a hammer that smashes
Truth without love is a sword that slashes
Truth without love is a club that bashes
Truth without love is a lie

Truth without love is a hammer that smashes
Truth without love is a sword that slashes
Truth without love is a club that bashes
Truth without love is a lie
The Ballad of Harry Jones

Everyone who knows him
Says he is a charming young man
But there’s much more to his story
Than anyone understands

He is a cracker-jack with a dime sack
Looking for a horse to ride
He loves to chase the dragon
It makes him feel alive

He breathes deeply into the vapor
Till the fog is too thick to see
Got trapped behind the eight ball
Doesn’t know how to get free

He is a cracker jack with a dime sack
Looking for a horse to ride
He lives to chase the dragon
Nothing else brings him alive

All caught up in a snow storm
Black tar up to his knees
He couldn’t outrun the monkey
Couldn’t heal from his disease

He was a cracker jack with a dime sack
Looking for a horse to ride
He had to chase the dragon
Until the day he died

He was a cracker jack with a dime sack
Looking for a horse to ride
He had to chase the dragon
Until the day he died
Candle Flame

I don’t know why I’m still standing here
Afraid to open up the door
Paralyzed by all my fear
Someday that knock won’t come no more

In the blinking of an eye
It will all be brushed away
That’s how fast our life goes by
We’re a candle flame
In the scheme of things

I don’t know what I keep waiting for
The prize is mine to take away
Breathe deeply in then reach for more
Before tomorrow is today

In the blinking of an eye
It will all be brushed away
That’s how fast our life goes by
We’re a candle flame
In the scheme of things

Killing time waiting for courage to appear
Nothing ventured nothing gained
Our destiny lies on the other side of our fear
So turn the key, unlatch the door,
Let in the very thing that you’ve been longing for

In the blinking of an eye
It will all be brushed away
That’s how fast our life goes by
We’re a candle flame
In the scheme of things

I don’t know why we’re still standing here
Afraid to open up the door
CRUMBLING DOWN

I laid the foundation stone by stone
And I kept building higher
As the years went on and on and on
I just kept getting tireder

Now the wall’s so tall you can’t see in
There ain’t no way around
I hope someday if I get free
This wall will come crumbling down

I built a fortress to keep hurt out
But my walls became a prison
I long to be on the other side
But I can’t see what I’m missing

‘Cause the wall’s so tall I can’t see out
There ain’t no way around
I hope someday when I get free
This wall will come crumbling down
This wall will come crumbling down

It makes no sense I don’t understand
How this chaos came together
Someday I'm sure it will all be clear
But for now I’m left to wonder

Why the wall’s so tall I can’t get out
There ain’t no way around
But I know someday that I’ll be free
And this wall will come crumbling down
This wall will come crumbling down

We laid the foundation stone by stone
And we kept building higher
As the years went on and on and on
We just kept getting tireder

Now the wall’s so tall we’re trapped inside
But we found the way around
And someday soon we’ll all be free
When these walls come crumbling down
These walls will come crumbling down
These walls will come crumbling down
Our Walls will come crumbling down
GOD AIN’T DONE

A four year degree and you started work
Popped the question then met the stork
Been confined to the daily grind
Seems your friends and fun got left behind

Think you’re too old to rock too tired to roll
That your glory days were a long time ago
Don’t give up the best is yet to come
‘Cause if you ain’t dead - God ain’t done

The kids got grown and they moved away
The house is quiet and the beds are made
Maybe there’s more you’re supposed to be
Than just another recruit for double ARP

Think you’re too old to rock too tired to roll
That your glory days were a long time ago
Don’t give up the best is yet to come
‘Cause if you ain’t dead - God ain’t done

Keep hanging in until you win it’s just like Yogi said
It ain’t over till it’s over you can quit when you are dead

Think you’re too old to rock too tired to roll
That your glory days were a long time ago
Don’t give up the best is yet to come
‘Cause if you ain’t dead - God ain’t done
Jesus is the Exit

I was raised right I knew right from wrong
I had big dreams and my faith was strong
There wasn’t nothin’ that I thought I couldn’t do
With the help of God and a friend or two

But I fell in with the wrong Joes
Took a wrong turn down a dark road
Gave my dreams up for a quick high
Went from gettin’ ahead to barely gettin’ by

But I found out it was a dead end
And my drinkin’ buddies weren’t my real friends
When the party stopped and it was time to pay
All those friends were gone - just the regrets remained

It’s a scary fast ride down the dark highway
And it leads to death if you decide to stay
But you can get off any time you say
Jesus is the exit - he’s the only way

So I turned back to what I once knew
Gave my life to Jesus cause I wanted to
It was the right turn down the narrow way
And I got no regrets to this very day

It’s a scary fast ride down the dark highway
And it leads to death if you decide to stay
But you can get off any time you say
Jesus is the exit - he’s the only way

So if you fell in with the wrong Joes
Took a wrong turn down a dark road
Gave your dreams up for a quick high
Went from gettin’ ahead to barely gettin’ by

You can get off that road and try one that’s new
Give your life to Jesus cause you want to
It’s the right turn down the narrow way
And you’ll never regret another single day

It’s a scary fast ride down the dark highway
And it leads to death if you decide to stay
But you can get off any time you say
Jesus is the exit - he’s the only way
